Artist statement
In this piece, I aimed to capture the profound and often overwhelming experience of sexual violence, along with the stark power dynamics that accompany it. The female figure, depicted with her head submerged deeper in a viscous black substance, symbolizes the sensation of drowning in the loss of agency and autonomy that comes with assault. Her downward gaze and vulnerable posture convey the profound sense of helplessness and vulnerability that survivors often endure.
Conversely, the male figure is positioned on a pedestal, elevated above the female counterpart and dripping with the same black substance. This imagery represents the unequal power dynamics inherent in many instances of sexual assault, where perpetrators exert control and dominance over their victims. By portraying the male figure as towering over the female, I aim to challenge societal norms and perceptions that perpetuate victim-blaming and excuse perpetrators of their actions.
Through this sculpture, I confront viewers with the uncomfortable reality of sexual violence and its devastating impact on survivors. By highlighting the imbalance of power and the pervasive nature of assault, I hope to spark meaningful dialogue and foster greater empathy and understanding within our society. It's my belief that art has the power to provoke introspection, inspire action, and contribute to the collective effort to combat sexual violence and create a more just and equitable world.
