A journey through a Chronic Illness

materials- cardboard, mod podge, and tissue paper
size- 3 inches x 2 inches

Artist Statement:

This abstract piece serves as a visual representation of the difficult memories and struggles I endured during that time. The dark color palette and rough, jagged edges of the piece reflect the tumultuous nature of the memories I carry from that period in my life. Gastroparesis brought about immense physical and emotional challenges, casting a shadow over my high school experience and leaving a lasting impact on my journey. Through the Memento, I wanted to capture the complex emotions and layers of adversity I faced, allowing viewers to connect with the rawness and authenticity of my narrative. Despite the darkness that permeates the piece, there is also a sense of resilience and strength, symbolizing the courage and perseverance required to confront and overcome adversity. Ultimately, "A Memento" serves as a testament to the power of art as a form of catharsis and expression, enabling me to process and confront the difficult memories of my past. By sharing my story through this artwork, I hope to foster empathy, understanding, and solidarity among those who may also be navigating their own struggles with illness or adversity.
